The CDC (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention) recommends everyone over 6 months or older receive a newly updated vaccine on Tuesday. Dr. Mandy Cohen will make sure that the vaccines will go out to clinics, pharmacies, and doctors. The newly updated vaccine was formulated to target an Omicron subvariant that was dominant earlier this year. Officials say that the vaccine will no longer need to be designed against the ancestral coronavirus strain.
The CDC voted to recommend the new vaccinations as authorized by the FDA. On Monday they gave the following authorizations, Adults and children over 5 can receive a single dose of the newly updated vaccine. As long as it’s been 2 months since the last one. Previously vaccinated babies and young children, ages 6 months to 4 years, can receive one or two doses of the updated vaccines. The timing and number of doses will depend on which COVID-19 vaccine they previously received.
Unvaccinated babies and young children in this age group can receive two doses of the updated Moderna vaccine or three doses of the updated vaccine. As of this spring 1% of adults, and 43% of seniors, nationwide had received the updated COVID-19 vaccine. COVID-19 has become less deadly thanks to vaccines but as years go by COVID-19 can develop to be dangerous and can cause to be deadly for some people. From October to April of last year 70,000 people were reported dead by COVID-19. This year 30,000 people died of COVID-19.
