Boygenius is an alternative, indie-rock band composed of musicians Phoebe Bridgers, Lucy Dacus, and Julien Baker. Although all three artists in the band have solo careers, the band overshadows it now with the success that it has received this past year. As of today, Boygenius has been officially nominated for 7 Grammys (the most prestigious awards given in the music industry).

The formation of the band was merely accidental. All 3 members of the band were up-and-coming artists in the industry and bonded over the struggles of being artists of the same genre. Together, they formed the band to prove the media wrong that women do not have to be against each other in the music industry. “You don’t have to compete with your contemporaries. You can make something good with the people you admire,” said band member Lucy Dacus.

The name Boygenius was adopted from an inside joke among the band members, which is meant to mimic male artists who believe their every thought is worthwhile and brilliant. The trio wanted to produce their music with the same energy as women received a multitude of criticism in the music industry.

In 2018, the band debuted with a studio EP boygenius that they wrote, performed, and self-produced in just four days. This EP was a quintessential blend of the different aspects of indie-rock music that each artist explored in their solo music. With intricate craft of lyricism and heart-touching instrumentation, the boygenius EP was perfect for an introduction to their band. “Something weird, unpredictable, and slightly dangerous happens when these three musical minds meld,” wrote Rolling Stone.

After the release of this EP, the band members continued with their solo projects as their debut EP was only created as a joyous project. However, in 2023, Boygenius returned to the music industry with their debut studio album entitled the record. Immediately after its release, their music was met with critical acclaim and became trending on social media platforms, such as TikTok, where fans would post about the relatability of the band’s music. A few months later, the band announced a tour where they would play in venues such as the Madison Square Garden and the Hollywood Bowl.

It has been a phenomenal year for the band with its newfound fame. From play-writing songs to touring the country, the hard work of the trio has been met with great rewards. As announced this morning, Boygenius is now a 7-time Grammy-nominated band. They’ve secured a spot in the main categories of Album of the Year and Record of the Year. The members of Boygenius are just geniuses!
