At East Los Angeles Renaissance Academy, vaping has emerged as a growing health crisis, disrupting students’ learning and well-being. Known as the ‘vape escape,’ this trend has prompted concern among educators and students alike as it impacts health, academic focus, and school culture. Here’s a closer look at how vaping is affecting our campus and what’s being done to address it
A recent survey conducted at East LA Renaissance Academy found that 84.5% of students believe underage vaping is harmful, yet 14.9% admitted to trying it. This contrast suggests that while students understand the risks, peer influence and curiosity often lead them to experiment.
One 11th-grade student explained that vaping on campus is often a result of peer influence. ‘Some people vape because they think it’s cool,’ she said. Reflecting on the impact on academics, she added, ‘Vaping affects your focus, makes you tired, and doesn’t motivate students to succeed.’ This highlights the broader toll vaping takes on students’ health and academic performance.
The prevalence of vaping on campus has created an uncomfortable environment for many students. ‘You always have to be aware of what’s happening around you,’ an 11th grader shared. ‘With how common vaping is, someone might do it nearby, and you could get blamed.’ A 12th grader echoed these sentiments, adding, ‘Peer pressure to vape creates a culture of addiction that spreads quickly.’ These perspectives show how vaping not only affects individual health but also disrupts the sense of safety at school.
According to the survey, 68% of students view vaping as a significant problem, while 32% do not. Those concerned about vaping cite its health risks and impact on the school environment, while others who don’t see it as an issue may not fully understand its consequences. This disparity highlights the need for better awareness and education about the risks associated with vaping.
Vaping presents a clear challenge at East LA Renaissance Academy, affecting both student health and the overall learning environment. With most students aware of its dangers, it’s essential to support this awareness through education and preventive measures. By fostering open conversations, implementing stricter policies, and offering resources for students, our school community can work together to create a safer and healthier environment.
