Halloween is a fun holiday for many people, but it comes with many possible dangers as well, which affects students and families in East LA. From traffic accidents to laced candy, being careful and taking precautions can make Halloween safer for everyone.
Halloween night can be very dangerous for pedestrians and drivers. Every year, there are always car accidents on Halloween night due to drinking and driving, walking in the dark, and other causes. According to Traffic Safety Marketing, from 2018 to 2022, there were 386 traffic fatalities during Halloween night with 52% of these crashes were caused by drunk drivers. With many parties and celebrations going on at night, it is important to make good decisions and avoid risky behaviors such as drinking and driving.
“People can lace the candies or get kidnapped.” said Julie Flores, a Junior at East Los Angeles Renaissance Academy (ELARA).
Checking Halloweeen candy is essential to avoid potential dangers. Some candies may be poisoned or tampered with harmful substances including marijuana, methamphetamine, and fentanyl.
“There could be fentanyl in chocolates and kids can be robbed.” said Anthony Hidalgo, a Junior at East Los Angeles Renaissance Academy (ELARA).
According to The Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), signs of marijuana-laced and methamphetamine-laced candy are unusual wrapping, appearance, unusual colors, odd smell, misspelled candy labels, or unmarked candy/food. Parents should always inspect the candy that their children are receiving to ensure that it is safe.
For teens and young adults celebrating Halloween, staying safe means making smart decisions. Taking drinks or substances from unfamiliar people should be avoided and letting family members know where you go ensures your safety. Keeping this in mind and taking precautions can make Halloween night safer and more fun.
“My mom does let me out for Halloween but it depends on who I am hanging out with. She wants me to be safe.” said Julie Flores, a Junior at East Los Angeles Renaissance Academy (ELARA).
