Every year, thousands of low-income students dream of attending top-tier colleges, but financial barriers make it nearly impossible. For most students, QuestBridge is the pathway to turn this dream into a reality.
QuestBridge is the aftermath from a merging of the minds of two Stanford University students in 1994, co-founders Ana Rowena and Dr. Michael McCullough. From an office in the suburbs of Palo Alto to a nonprofit organization across the United States, QuestBridge is a valuable resource for low-income high school students across the nation in accessing higher education with little to no costs.
It began as a local five-week summer residential program for high-achieving high school juniors, connecting like-minded teenagers together in an atmosphere of rigorous academics, critical-thinking, and vibrant intellectual curiosity.
Witnessing the ambitions and potential of these low-income students first-hand, Rowena and Dr. McCullough became inspired to expand the outreach of their organization hoping to connect intelligent, driven students to top colleges and universities across the country. “Five weeks is not long enough to end a journey, but it is long enough to begin one,” said Dr. Michael McCullough, one of the founders of QuestBridge.
Today, QuestBridge acts as a “bridge “ connecting high-achieving, low-income high school seniors to over 55 partnered colleges and universities in the United States with a full-ride scholarship through the National College Match (NCM). If a student is “matched” with a school, they receive a full four-year scholarship that covers tuition, room and board, and other expenses – without any need for loans or parental contribution.
Alternatively, there is also a program for high school juniors – the College Prep Scholars Program – which provides early exposure to the college application process and increases students’ chances of securing a full scholarship through the NCM by providing personalized feedback on college essays, summer programs at prestigious colleges, and access to the QuestBridge National College Match Conference.

Since 2003, over 17,000 students have been admitted to Questbridge-partner institutions on full-ride scholarships ranging from small liberal arts colleges, like Hamilton College and Wellesley College to the Ivy Leagues, like Columbia University and Yale University.
“Throughout most of high school, I always believed that if I was lucky, I’d go to community college, and in most other cases, wouldn’t get any higher education, mostly due to a lack of money. A few of my friends told me about the National College Match so I decided to apply, thinking that Questbridge was probably my only shot at getting a higher education. Being matched feels like a dream come true, where I can continue my education,” said Angel Ramirez-Rios, a QuestBridge Finalist who was admitted to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
On Jan. 23, 2025, QuestBridge announced that they have recently partnered with three more institutions in providing full-ride scholarships for ambitious students: Bates College, Harvard College, and the University of Richmond. As more top-tier, elite institutions partner with QuestBridge, the best and brightest students from all socioeconomic backgrounds are able to easier access the
“These exceptional institutions provide opportunities, connections, and resources for our students to unlock their potential and excel not only on campus, but also throughout their lives. We look forward to collaborating with these outstanding colleges and celebrating the impact these scholars will make in the years to come,” said co-founder Ana Rowena in a press release for QuestBridge’s announcement.
Applying to QuestBridge is a rigorous process that pushes students to reflect on their academic journeys, personal challenges, and aspirations. The application consists of multiple essays, financial documentation, and letters of recommendation from teachers.
“Writing 23 essays in 2 weeks was quite the challenge but I just thought about how the reward was so worth it and pushed through,” said Michaela Snyder Braasch, a non-match QuestBridge Finalist.
QuestBridge implements a holistic approach in reviewing their applications, meaning that extracurricular activities and additional information are assessed by application readers. Many students applying to the scholarships find themselves overwhelmed at first, but ultimately, they come out of the process with a stronger understanding of their own potential.
“Balancing school and the application deadlines was so difficult. Sometimes I felt like I was choosing between working towards something that wasn’t even guaranteed, or spending time studying for an upcoming exam. I overcome them by realizing I’m not the only one feeling overwhelmed. Being overwhelmed is part of the process and just proves I am capable of handling a heavy workload,” said Johnna Hedge, a QuestBridge Finalist who matched to Davidson College when asked about the challenges of the application process.
Beyond just financial assistance, the QuestBridge scholarship provides a tight-knit community for its scholars. Most finalists gain access to mentorship programs hosted by special guest speakers, career development workshops through online conferences, and networking opportunities with fellow QuestBridge scholars and alumni through the QuestBridge Network Facebook Group. “Some of the application was difficult to understand, but the QuestBridge community through FaceBook really helped in understanding the process more,” said Arina Ellard, a QuestBridge Finalist, who is continuing with regular decisions after not matching to a school.

Many students report that the friendships they build through QuestBridge last beyond their college years, providing a support system that helps them navigate the challenges of higher education. Meeting like-minded students is a fundamental aspect in realizing one’s potential and taking in inspiration from others. Through the QuestBridge community, many students have learned others .
“I have met so many deserving and hard working individuals. I am so glad they all were given the opportunity to advance their education and not have to worry about the financial aspect. Educationally, it has motivated me to keep improving and keep working just as hard,” said Ashlee Senda, a QuestBridge Finalist, who is waiting to hear back from regular decisions.
However, when a QuestBridge Finalist “matches” to a college or a university, the student is legally obligated to attend the institution that they match to. The National College Match is a binding process, meaning that students cannot apply to other colleges through Early Decision or Early Action while applying to the QuestBridge National College Match Scholarship.
There is a contract, known as the Match Agreement Form, that needs to be signed by the student, the parent/guardian of the student, and the academic counselor of the student agreeing that the student will not apply early to another school outside of the QuestBridge partnership. This commitment ensures that the student is definite about attending the institution they match to when given the full-ride scholarship. Consequently, it is best that a student is completely sure about attending the schools that they rank on their application.
“Research the schools you’re interested in months before applying and find their supplemental essays,” advised Chidubem Idowu, who didn’t match to a QuestBridge-partner institution, when choosing schools to rank during the NCM process.
It is important that students are absolutely certain that they belong and thrive at the school of their choice. A student’s mental health and sense of belonging at their respective colleges may prevail the benefits of a full-ride scholarship. Being rid of student debt may not be worth it if a student is not content with where they are at.
With many aspects to the QuestBridge applications, students often find themselves struggling to navigate through the life-changing journey of completing their applications. Most QuestBridge Finalists, being first-generation students, often emphasize the need for a strong support system as they persevere through the daunting process of brainstorming essay topics, gathering financial documents, and curating their extracurricular activities list.
The pressure of ranking schools and waiting for results can be emotionally draining.“I had difficulty navigating things during the application process, along with deadlines. I overcome these challenges by asking for help and guidance from the community, as well as QB’s awesome service; answering my questions to the best of their abilities,” said Shueking Yang, a QuestBridge Finalist, when asked about challenges during the application process.
With QuestBridge offering vast resources guiding students through the process, the stress is often alleviated for most applicants as they learn from the QuestBridge network. Academic counselors and teachers from school, or even family members and peers, may act as an excellent support system during stressful times. There is always someone to reach out to, no matter the circumstances.
Despite these challenges, QuestBridge is an extremely valuable resource for first-generation, low-income high school students who are intellectually gifted and driven. It is a great alternative to applying through the Common App and Coalition Application, even guaranteeing a full-ride scholarship to those who match. Students are encouraged to apply to QuestBridge, whether they believe in themselves or not.
“It made me realize that a higher education and career opportunities aren’t only reserved for people who can afford them, but for people like me too who aren’t as financially capable. It inspired me to push harder towards my goals, knowing that my ceiling has been raised significantly,” said Shueking Yang, when asked about the experience of applying to the QuestBridge NCM.
QuestBridge represents more than just a scholarship. It’s a community of motivated, high-achieving students who, through collaboration and support, can overcome obstacles and achieve their dreams.
