On October 3, Taylor Swift released a new album called, “Life Of a Showgirl”. In the album–it includes a collaboration with Sabrina Carpenter, a singer who is in slight controversy over her album cover. When the album was released–instead of fans overhyping it like usual, they realized this wasn’t by far her best work. Many fans expressed their disappointment over lyrics that just sounded silly and childish, some lines not even rhyming. Even with everyone on social media making fun of the songs, it took the #1 spot on the BillBoard 200. This has been a recurring pattern with Taylor’s new music. A bunch of people speculate she’s paying the music industry to promote her album more and produce more half-baked music to overpower other rising artists to remain on top. According to Max, a freshman in Renaissance stated, “She purposefully befriended other artists so they can advertise her new releases and secure her place at the top”. Though all of these claims have just been theories speculated by people, there’s evidence that supports this. She befriends artists and makes their relationship very public, just to show her fans how friendly she is. Usually, these friendships are temporary and only exist in the first place when she is working on an album with said artist. An example is, “Life Of a Showgirl” Taylor recently collaborated with Sabrina Carpenter. Taylor’s new album already has 24 versions. This pattern has been evident, even with her last album, “Tortured Poets Department.” It has been recorded with at least 34 versions. This is an aggressive business tactic to release and drop multiple variants for fans to eat up and leave other artists blocked from earning the number one spot. Her newest album however, already broke records. Just by the first week, she sold 3.378 million copies. Based on Cover of Taylor’s New Album a survey taken on her, 80% fans didn’t enjoy her new (Life of a Showgirl) songs, showing its just loyalty rather than actual impressive skills that keep her fans drawn to her. A lot of fans believe her success just stems from her loyal fanbase and just being unapologetically herself. In their eyes, she could do no wrong. This develops a strong parasocial relationship, even blinding them from pure facts. Many say that Taylor Swift is the first ever ethical billionaire, earning her wealth from “hard work.” However, no billionaires are ethical. Accumulating a large amount of money is already considered immoral. A post on threads from the user “Memento.Mori.Photography” states, “I can’t fathom and cannot stand the hate she receives. It’s absurd and illogical. She’s a self made billionaire with a heart of gold. We should all aspire to be both so hardworking and kind.”. This just shows how uneducated some of her fans are. Taylor isn’t a self made billionaire at all, she actively corrupts the music industry to produce soulless music. No person can gain that much money without some degree of exploitation, environmental impact, and tax avoidance. Another response, from an anonymous person, stated, “I don’t really like the way she uses her money (that one jet incident from a few months ago, super bad for the environment).”. This practice of releasing multiple variants of albums began in 2020, starting with the album “Folklore.” Her fortune skyrocketed because she began dropping multiple albums. The boost was also from her Era’s Tour and the release of it in theaters. I believe people should go out of their way to support smaller artists who actually want to make a difference, or at least be educated on facts that their favorites are morally bad. Ultimately, Taylor Swift’s mass production is highly wasteful–especially the physical editions. It’s especially harmful to artists who want to seek attention when all variants are blocking the number one spot. Taylor Swift will never ever be a hard-working billionaire when she purposefully corrupts the music industry.
