East Los Angeles Renaissance Academy was opened in response to the overcrowding at local neighborhood high

school, James A. Garfield- which rotated on three different tracks due to trying to service 4,000

plus students. Teachers, students, parents and the community created and presented proposals to LAUSD, winning the bid to open a school aimed at preparing it’s students for real world experience with an emphasis on architecture, urban planning and how these impact the community- the idea that by being accomplished in the arts and sciences, students can be better prepared to face it, true renaissance men and women- seeing the need for change and making it a reality.

Da Vinci’s famous Vitruvian man is the embodiment of using art to convey observations and studies of the world around us, blending the two into something new and innovative. This school paper is one step towards that goal- we blend art and story telling to interpret the world as we see it, call for change as needed, and move each other to push for the best.  Just like those in our community who saw the need for something different to better serve our neighborhood, we invite you on this journey of becoming Renaissance scholars- using all we know to impact the world in new and unforseen ways.
